LAUNDRY

Laundry was first done in watercourses, letting the water carry away the materials which could cause stains and smells. Laundry is still done this way in the rural regions of poor countries. Agitation helps remove the dirt, so the laundry was rubbed, twisted, or slapped against flat rocks.

Regular washing of clothes and bedding, helps to remove any bacteria, dirt, fleas, mites and other irritants or infection. Washing of clothes and bedding can help reduce the incidence of infectious diseases, such as diarrhoeal disease, respiratory infections, scabies and other skin infections.

Although people actively washed their clothing up to about two hundred years ago, inventions resembling the washing machine we know today already began to come about. As early as 1767, Jacob Christian Schäffer of Germany created the first machine. In 1797, Nathaniel Briggs received the first patent for his invention.
